1) Bessie Potter Vonnoh, born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 17, 1872 to March 8, 1955 (aged 82), was an American sculptor known for her small bronzes, mostly of domestic scenes, & her garden fountains
2) In school, she enjoyed clay-modeling class and decided early on that she wanted to be a sculptor. In 1886, at age 14, she enrolled in classes at the Art Institute of Chicago.
3) In March 1903, the NY Times noted that the Vonnohs were two of a dozen painters & sculptors who got together to create a building specifically for their studios in Manhattan.
4) Vonnoh's small scale works were suitable for the size and style of the average American home and had broad appeal. Many of her works, such as Water lilies, were portraits.
5) Her stated artistic objective, as she told an interviewer in 1925, was to "look for beauty in the everyday world, to catch the joy and swing of modern American life."
6) In 1915, she exhibited in the Armory Show. In 1921, she was elected as an academician of the National Academy of Design. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1931.
