1) Betty Parsons, born on January 31, 1900 to July 23, 1982 (aged 82) in New York, New York, was an American artist, art dealer, and collector known for her early promotion of Abstract Expressionism.
2) In 1913, she visited the Armory show, the International Exhibition of Modern Art. She was delighted and inspired by what she saw. She described this pivotal moment as art being the world she wanted.
3) Although her parents disapproved, she soon began studying art in the studio of Gutzon Borglum, whom she described as a poor teacher. She went to Paris & enrolled in Academie de la Grande Chaumiere.
4) She went back to America and taught sculpture classes for a short time. In 1936, she moved back to NY and had her first solo exhibition. Her watercolor paintings were well received.
5) She would have nine more one woman shows at Midtown over the next twenty years. She was generous, encouraging, & caring in promoting artists, & never refused them. She gave critiques on the spot.
6) Her work is held in the collections of The Whitney, SAAM, & MoMA. In 2023, her work was included in the exhibit: Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940 to 1970.
