1) Dorothea Margaret Tanning, born in Galesburg, Illinois on August 25, 1910 to January 31, 2012 (aged 101), was an American painter, printmaker, sculptor, writer, and poet.
2) After two years of college she quit to pursue an artistic career. She moved to Chicago in 1930 & then to NY in 1935, where she supported herself as a commercial artist while working on her painting.
3) In NY, she discovered Surrealism at the Museum of Modern Art's seminal 1936 exhibit. This led her develop her own individual style over the course of an artistic career that spanned six decades.
4) She read many Gothic & Romantic novels from her local library in her hometown of Galesburg. Filled with imagery of the imaginary, this heavily influenced her style & subject matter for years to come.
5) Over the next decade, her paintings evolved, becoming less explicit and more suggestive. By the late 1960s, her paintings were almost completely abstract, yet always suggestive of the female form.
6) She wrote stories & poems throughout her life. She wrote books & her paintings were in many exhibits. She states: 'There is no such thing as women artists; one is given & the other is you.'
