1) Edward Hicks, born in Attleboro, Pennsylvania, on April 4, 1780 to August 23, 1849 (aged 69), was an American folk painter and distinguished Christian minister of the Society of Friends (aka Quakers).
2) He was raised by Matron Elizabeth Twining after his mother died when he was eighteen months old. She taught him the Quaker beliefs, which had a great effect on the rest of his life.
3) He resumed decorative painting at the urging of his close friend. Quaker beliefs prohibited a lavish life or having excessive quantities of objects or materials.
4) He transitioned into a life of painting & he used his canvases to convey his beliefs. He was unconfined by rules of his congregation, & able to freely express what religion could not: faith.
5) His first major exhibit took place in 1860. His work focused on religious subjects while using current events to portray them. He depicted predators & prey next to each other to show peace.
6) Hicks almost always painted outdoor scenes, in which the light source is the sun or sky. Many of the colors have the same warmth or brown tone & most of his paintings are asymmetrically balanced.
