1) Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is generally considered the foremost realist painter of 20th-century America. Though Hopper also worked in etching and watercolor, he is best known for his oil paintings,
2) which often convey a sense of melancholy or isolation. He said once, no amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination, highlighting the value of imagination.
3) His realistic depictions of everyday urban scenes shock the viewer into recognition of the strangeness of familiar surroundings.
4) He spent nearly six years taking classes at the New York School of Art, where he was taught both by William Merritt Chase, an Impressionist painter, and Robert Henri member of the Ashcan School.
5) Hopper sold one painting in 1913 but didn't make another major sale for a decade. To support himself, he continued to illustrate business and trade journals, assignments he mostly detested.
6) His stature took a sharp rise in 1931 when major museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum got interested. Then he continued to exhibit in every Whitney annual.
