1) Elizabeth Jane Gardner Bouguereau, born in Exeter, New Hampshire on October 4, 1837 to January 28, 1922 (aged 84), was an American academic and salon painter.

2) The biggest challenge to her training was the restriction on women studying anatomy from nude models. She overcame this restriction by wearing male attire to gain admittance to the all male school.

3) She studied in Paris under the figurative painter Hugues Merle, salon painter Jules Joseph Lefebvre, & William Adolphe Bouguereau. She channeled his style so well that her work was mistaken was his.

4) In 1868, she was the first woman to exhibit at the Paris Salon. During that time, her paintings were accepted in 25 Paris Salons. She was also the first woman awarded a gold medal at the 1872 Salon.

5) She also exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts & The Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Her most known work, La Confidence, is in the Georgia Museum of Art.

6) She known to be very independent and feisty. She was an astute businesswoman & an excellent linguist, switching from her native English to French, Italian or German. She excelled in social graces too.
