1) Gertrude Kasebier, born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 18, 1852 to October 12, 1934 (aged 82), was an American photographer known for her images of motherhood, Native Americans, & her career for women.
2) During her four years in Colorado, she developed an interest in and affection for Native Americans. Her unhappy marriage served as inspiration for two of her most strikingly titled photographs.
3) Despite her & her husband's differences, her husband supported her financially when she began to attend art school at the age of 37. She later attended the newly Pratt Institute full time.
4) Over the next decade, she took dozens of photos of Indians. Some of them became her more famous images. She focused more on the expression & individuality of them rather than their costumes & customs.
5) She helped establish the Women's Professional Photographers Association of America. She also helped Clarence H. White find the group Pictorial Photographers of America.
6) A major collection of her work is held by the University of Delaware. In 1979, she was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum.
