1) Ida Kohlmeyer, born in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 3, 1912 to January 24, 1997 (aged 84), was an American painter and sculptor who lived and worked in Louisiana.
2) She earned a BA in English at Newcomb College. After graduating, she married & went to Vera Cruz & Mexico City for their honeymoon. There, she became interested in South & Central America art.
3) She returned to Newcomb (former women's coordinate college of Tulane University) in 1950 & completed a MFA in painting in 1956. She later studied at the painting school of NY artist Hans Hofmann.
4) She had her first exhibition at the New Orleans Museum of Art in 1957, & her first exhibition in New York City at the Ruth White Gallery in 1959. She completed several major commissions later in life.
5) Inspired by her interest in South American art, she explored a distinctive vocabulary of hieroglyphs, shapes, & signs, all organized in a loose grid, that hovered among abstraction, writing & emblem.
6) In 2004, Newcomb Art Gallery organized Systems of Color, an exhibit & accompanying book, dedicated to her. NOMA celebrated 100 years of her career in 2012 to 2013. In 2016, DAM included her biography.
