1) Jessie Willcox Smith, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 6, 1863 to May 3, 1935 (aged 71), was an American illustrator during the Golden Age of American illustration.

2) Persuaded to attend one of her friend's or cousin's art classes, Smith realized she had a talent for drawing. In 1884 or 1885, she attended the Philadelphia School of Design for Women.

3) In 1885, she attended the PAFA under Thomas Eakins' and Thomas Anshutz' supervision. She graduated in June 1888. The same year, she was hired for an entry level position for the Ladies' Home Journal.

4) At the turn of the twentieth century, Smith's career flourished. She illustrated a number of books, magazines, and created an advertisement for Ivory soap.

5) Her works were published in Scribner's, Harper's Bazaar, Harper's Weekly, and St. Nicholas Magazine. She was particularly known for her illustrations & advertising posters of children and women.

6) According to the NM American Illustration, many say she is the "greatest children's book illustrator." She made more than 250 periodicals, 200 magazine covers, 60 books, prints, calendars & posters.
