1) Laozi (translated as "Old Master") also rendered as Lao Tzu, born in present-day Luyi, Henan on 6th to late 4th century BCE, was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer.
2) He is the reputed author of the Tao Te Ching, the founder of philosophical Taoism, and a deity in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions.
3) A semi-legendary figure, Laozi is usually portrayed as a 6th-century BCE contemporary of Confucius in the Spring and Autumn period.
4) As a central figure in Chinese culture, Laozi is claimed by both emperors of the Tang dynasty and the modern people of the Li surname as a founder of their lineage (Laozi was born as Li Er).
5) Laozi's work has been embraced by various anti-authoritarian movements, and has had a profound impact on subsequent Chinese philosophers, who have both commended and criticized his work extensively.
6) In 749, he's named "Sage of Great Tao and Mysterious and Primordial Emperor." In 754, honored "Great Sage of Highest Great Tao of the Golden Order and Mysterious and Primordial Heavenly Great Emperor.
