1) Lucian Michael Freud, born in Berlin, Germany on December 8, 1922 to July 20, 2011 (age 88), was a British painter and draughtsman and is known as one of the foremost 20th century English portraitists

2) A private and guarded man, his paintings composed of his friends & family in a 60 year career. His work is generally sombre & thickly impastoed, often set in unsettling interiors and urban landscapes.

3) His paintings are noted for their psychological penetration and often discomforting examination of the relationship between artist and model. He extended and punished sittings from his models.

4) From the 1950s, he began to focus on portraiture, often nudes (full nudes in 1966). The use of animals in his compositions is widespread, and often he features a pet and its owner.

5) On November 10, 2015 Freud's 2004 painting The Brigadier, a portrait of Andrew Parker Bowles in his British Royal Army uniform sold for $34.89 million, beating the $30 million US presale estimate.
