1) Pierre Bonnard, born in Fontenay-aux-Roses, Seine, France on October 3, 1867 to January 23, 1947 (age 79), was French painter, illustrator and printmaker.

2) He is known especially for the stylized decorative qualities of his paintings and his bold use of color. He is a founding member of the Post-Impressionist group of avant-garde painters Les Nabis.

3) His early work was strongly influenced by the work of Paul Gauguin, as well as the prints of Hokusai & other Japanese artists. He was a leading figure in the transition from Impressionism to Modernism

4) He painted landscapes, urban scenes, portraits and intimate domestic scenes, where the backgrounds, colors and painting style usually took precedence over the subject.

5) At the time of his death, his reputation had been eclipsed by subsequent avant-garde developments in the art world. He's known as 'the most thoroughly idiosyncratic of all the great twentieth-century'

6) His record price in a public sale was for Terrasse a Vernon, sold by Christie's in 2011 for 8,485,287 pounds (7,014,200 USD). He features heavily in the 2005 Booker prize winning novel, 'The Sea.'
