1) Rembrandt Peale, born in Richboro, Bucks County, Pennsylvania on February 22, 1778 to October 3, 1860 (aged 82), was an American artist and museum keeper.

2) His father taught him and all of his siblings to paint scenery and portraiture. He also tutored Rembrandt in the arts and sciences. Rembrandt began drawing at the age of eight.

3) In July 1787, his father introduced him to George Washington, and the young aspirant artist watched his father paint the future president. In 1795, at age 17, he painted an aging Washington.

4) On August 15, 1814, he launched his first museum, and was elaborately illuminated by gas light. In 1826, he helped found the National Academy of Design in New York City.

5) Rembrandt Peale completed more than 600 paintings. He painted portraits of many notable people, including American presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, & Chief Justice John Marshall.

6) His paintings are in many public collections, including SAAM, BMA, PAFA, DIA, Birmingham Museum of Art, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, DMA, Berkshire Museum, La Salle University Art Museum, SLAM, & others.
