1) Thomas Sully, born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England on June 19, 1783 to November 5, 1872 (aged 89), was an English American portrait painter.
2) After a brief apprenticeship to an insurance broker, who recognized his artistic talent, Sully began painting at age 12. He went to school with Charles Fraser & received informal instruction from him.
3) Sully became a professional painter at age 18 in 1801. He stopped painting portraits & was encouraged by Benjamin West to study the work of portrait artists he admired.
4) His 1824 portraits of John Quincy Adams, who became President within the year, & the general Marquis de Lafayette, brought him widespread recognition. Sully also made historical pieces and landscapes.
5) In 1837 to 1838, he was in London to paint Queen Victoria. Sully taught portrait painting to Marcus Aurelius Root, who later became an internationally successful daguerreotypist.
6) Sully was a prolific artist and produced more than 2,300 paintings over the course of his seventy year career. The World War II Liberty Ship SS Thomas Sully was named in his honor.
